In the 17´th century Isfahan was one of the most magnificient and richest cities in the world. Rugs from Isfahan are counted among the finest and most expensive rugs knotted in Iran today.
Isfahan rugs are generally made of a very fine wool and silk in the pile, warp is silk and weft is cotton. Generally floral designs dominate with a central medaillion. Often graceful and sugestive Persian miniature paintings are portrayed (e.g. arabesques, spirals, palm-leaves, vines, artistic animal or plant motifs.) with colour schemes among the richest of all Persian rugs. The most common background colours are beige, light blue or dark blue and red.
